February 2019

This news actually officially posted up last week, but I would be remiss in not drawing official notice to it here in EMLA-land! Hot on the heels of his newest gorgeous picture book release, JUST RIGHT: THE SEARCH FOR THE GOLDILOCKS PLANET, we have a fantastic and charming new deal to announce for author Curtis Manley.

Here is the official deal announcement:

Emily Feinberg at Roaring Brook Press has acquired world rights to Curtis Manley’s THE RESCUER OF TINY CREATURES, illustrated by Lucy Ruth Cummins. This picture book follows a girl who prides herself in rescuing imperiled insects and encourages her classmates to do the same. Publication is planned for Spring 2021. Ammi-Joan Paquette at Erin Murphy Literary Agency represented the author, and Emily van Beek at Folio Jr. / Folio Literary Management represented the illustrator.

With all the charm and wit and warmth that characterizes a Curtis Manley picture book, this gem-to-be is one you won’t want to miss.

Hooray and congrats, Curtis!

I am so pleased to share the news that Kersten Hamilton has something brand-new and absolutely wonderful on the publishing horizon: FIRST FRIEND, which shows how wolves evolved into domesticated dogs through generations of humans—from one pair of child and dog to another, each iteration growing closer to communication and cohabitation, all the way to the present-day readers and their pups.

The wonderful acquiring editor, Janine O’Malley of FSG, snagged Jaime Kim, who did the ebullient art for Kate DiCamillo’s LA LA LA, to illustrate.

Congratulations, Kersten!

Since its publication early last year, Pat Zietlow Miller’s moving and timely picture book, BE KIND, has taken readers by storm. Brought to visual life by the inimitable Jen Hill, this picture book has spent 10 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and sparked countless kindness initiatives in homes and classrooms all across the country.

So what’s next from this dynamic duo, you ask? I’m so glad you did . . . and here is your answer!

Connie Hsu at Roaring Brook Press has acquired the picture book BE STRONG, by New York Times bestselling author and illustrator Pat Zietlow Miller and Jen Hill. A young girl thoughtfully explores the concept of inner strength, from her father showing up to help others and her mother speaking up to city leaders to seeing her grandmother never, ever giving up. Ammi-Joan Paquette at Erin Murphy Literary Agency represented the author, and Annie Moore Armstrong at Bright Agency represented the illustrator in a the deal for World rights. The book will publish in winter 2021.

I for one cannot wait for what is sure to be another modern classic, delivered with humor and heart. Huge congratulations, Pat and team!

Yes, you read that header right—fantastic good news is on the horizon! Elizabeth Acevedo, superstar poet and author of the smash breakout novel THE POET X, has some exciting new surprises up her sleeve. Here’s a snapshot teaser of what she’s got coming next…

CLAP WHEN YOU LAND is the story of two sisters who each do not know the other exists until their father unexpectedly dies in a plane crash. In this dual-narrative YA novel in verse, set in Washington Heights and Puerto Plata, these very different young women come to terms with the loss of a father who was more complicated than either of them knew, and with their beckoning future which looks different than either of them could have imagined.

This breathtaking new novel was scooped up by her Harper Collins editor, Rosemary Brosnan, in a two-book deal, and will be publishing in spring 2020.

Can’t wait that long for more? Make sure to pre-order Elizabeth’s second YA novel, WITH THE FIRE ON HIGH, which is hitting shelves everywhere on May 7th.

Huge congratulations, Liz!
